HOYA MiYOSMART is a spectacle lens designed to correct short-sighted vision and help slow the progression of myopia in children. It offers a glasses-based option for families who do not want contact lenses.
How do MiYOSMART lenses work?
The central area gives your child clear vision. Around it are many small lens segments that create a different focus. HOYA calls this Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) technology. The aim is to reduce the signal that encourages the eye to grow longer as myopia progresses.
How much can they help?
In a two-year clinical study, children wearing DIMS lenses had, on average, about 60% less myopia progression than children wearing standard single-vision lenses. This describes a study average; results vary between children and the lenses do not cure nor reverse myopia.
Will my child still see clearly?
Yes. MiYOSMART lenses are prescription glasses for everyday vision as well as myopia management. We check the prescription, fit and vision when dispensing them.
Can the lenses go into my child's current frame?
Sometimes. We need to check that the frame fits well and is suitable for the lens design. If it is not, we can help choose another frame.
How long will they need to wear them?
MiYOSMART lenses are intended for regular daily wear. Myopia can keep changing throughout the teenage years, so many children continue with some form of myopia control into their later teens. Around age 18 is a useful time to reassess, but it is not an automatic stopping point. We review your child’s prescription and, where appropriate, eye length to decide whether treatment is still worthwhile.
How do MiYOSMART glasses compare with contact lenses or Ortho-K?
They avoid contact lens handling and overnight lens wear. MiSight daily contact lenses and Ortho-K are other options for some children. The best choice depends on the prescription, eye health, lifestyle and your child's preferences.
