Eye examinations

Regular eye examinations

Even if your vision seems fine it is still worth having regular eye examinations. Some serious eye conditions such as glaucoma have no symptoms in the early stages so a regular eye exam can help detect these conditions early.

For most of our patients, we recommend a full examination every 2 years. Sometimes you may need more frequent exams. If you have a family history of glaucoma then we recommend annual examinations. Most contact lens wearers should have a examination every 6 - 12 months.

From what age should I have my child's eyes tested?

Your child's eyes can be examined at any age. An eye check is recommended before they start school and start learning to read. Often vision problems can be the reason a child does not perform well at school, for example because they have difficulty seeing the board. The earlier a problem with the child's vision is detected the more chance there is of successful treatment. Children’s eyes are fully developed by the time they are 8 years old so it is very important to have any problems detected before this.

In some cases, if there is a family history of eye problems or if the eye exam results are inconclusive, then it may be necessary for your child to have their eyes examined by an eye specialist.
